Guide to choosing wire, tape, and braid

There are three criteria for determining performance:

Conductivity:  how much power the product delivers and how far.

Durability:  how the product stands up to wear and tear under varying environmental conditions.

Design:  how the product performs long term - e.g., if a strand is broken, is it repowered further along
                        the fence?

Copper wire used in some fence products is highly conductive but it is not as strong as stainless-steel and can "fatigue," deteriorate and break easily.  Stainless-steel wire is stronger but is less conductive.  The best option, Turbo, developed by Gallagher, is mixed metal strands that offer power, performance and durability - the best of all worlds.  In the Gallagher range, Turbo products are better for long-term reliability and conductivity.  They are less likely to be challenged, damaged or broken by livestock.

Turbo Tape is generally used where visibility is important.   BETTER for Horses

Turbo Wire is preferable where wind or adverse weather conditions exist.   GOOD for Horses

EquiBraid is braided product designed not to "tangle" or overstretch.   BEST for Horses

  Performance chart

This chart shows, for each Turbo product versus the competitor's product, the predicted voltage felt by the animal at various distances, if the voltage at the beginning of the fence is 8,000 volts.  Turbo products have significantly greater voltage compared with Poly products after 1/4 and 3/4 mile.

A
  Turbo Wire

     • Best suited to distances more the 1/4

mile, where extreme power is required.

     • Turbo Wire (9 strand) resistance is 209
         ohms/mile - 40 times more conductive

         than standard Polywire.

B  Competitor's Polywire

     • Resistance: 10,000 ohms/mile.

     • Best suited for distances under 1/8

         mile.

C  1/2" Turbo Tape

     • Resistance:  400 ohms/mile.

     • Ideal for semi-permanent and portable

         electric fences.

     • Best suited for distances greater than

         1/2 mile.

D  1/2" Competitor's Poly Tape

     • Resistance: 13,600 ohms/mile.

     • Best suited for distances under 1/8

         mile.

E  1 1/2" Turbo Tape

     • Resistance: 230 ohms/mile.

     • Ideal for horse fencing.

     • Best suited for distances greater than

         1/2 mile.

F  1/2" Competitor's Poly Tape

     • Resistance: 3,800 ohms/mile

     • Ideal for horse fencing.

     • Best suited for distances under 1/8

        mile.

G  Turbo EquiBraid

     • Resistance: 155 ohms/mile.

     • Most user-friendly equine product.

     • Best suited for any distance of horse

         fence.
