Is an
energy-free fountain the right choice for you?
If it
never gets very cold (below 15ºF) for an extended period of time
an energy free fountain or regular fountain without heat may work
well for you.
If
you don't mind daily maintenance during freezing temps, a "ball"
type fountain can be okay. Ball type fountains typically
require you to knock the balls loose every morning (and some
evenings) in cold temperatures. In the summer there is no
extra maintenance.
Limited heat fountains with balls will help keep the valve and
water in the trough from freezing but the ball will still need to
be knocked loose every morning in cold temperatures.
Other
considerations:
• Will you have close to the rated capacity on the fountain?
• Will this be the only access to water these animals have?
• Are you on a water system where the water is warm (drawn
from a well) as opposed to cold (rural
water system with an above ground storage or pulled from a river)?
• Can you properly install the fountain with a large riser
(12" diameter, preferably insulated).
If you answered "no" to any of these questions please order a
fountain with at least limited heat.
We
want you to be pleased with the fountain you order from us and if
it freezes up on a regular basis in the winter you won't be
pleased.
Fully
heated plastic open trough fountains are very efficient and can
run in northern climates for around $35 per season for the regular
and utility size. Large fountains will cost approximately
double this.
We of
course recommend a qualified electrician hook up the electrical
system on your fountain for your safety and the safety of you
animals.
